Maintain Your Fire Extinguishers

5/2/2022 (Permalink)

Fire extinguishers must be in working order to perform properly. OSHA regulations stipulate that commercial businesses must inspect their portable fire extinguishers monthly. This practice would also be beneficial for Homeowners who possess a fire extinguisher. Know what to check and how to make sure your extinguishers are working properly.

Fire Extinguisher Inspection

Location

All fire extinguishers should be easy to locate and easy to see. If it cannot be easily seen or reached, the extinguisher should be relocated so that it can be more easily accessed.

Pressure Gauge

The pressure gauge should be pointing to the green area, known as the operating zone. This zone means the extinguisher is ready for use. If the needle is to the left or the right of the operating zone, the extinguisher has lost pressure and needs to be recharged or is under too much pressure and is at risk of a leak or a cylinder failure. Call a fire professional right away if the pressure gauge is outside of the operating zone.

Inspection Tag

The inspection tag identifies when the last annual inspection took place and when the next one is due. If there is no inspection tag the extinguisher should be inspected and a new one will be attached.

Damage

Lastly, the extinguisher needs to be checked thoroughly for damage or deterioration. Check the label and serial number to make sure it can still be read. Check for dents and punctures, as well as rust and corrosion. The hose should still be securely fastened to the extinguisher and free of cracks or other damage. Also, the locking pin should be present and fastened correctly and securely. The extinguisher must also have a tamper seal. This will indicate if anyone has attempted to use or discharge the unit.  If any extinguishers are damaged or tampered with, have them professionally inspected immediately.

Record Your Findings

Write your name or initials, signature, and date of inspection to confirm that it has been done. After you’ve signed off, write a report that describes any issues and the steps required to remedy them.

Following these guidelines will ensure your extinguishers will be ready for use in case of fire.

Happy Customers

SERVPRO® of Tustin and SERVPRO® of Orange/Villa Park has been serving the cleanup and restoration needs of Orange residents and commercial businesses for over 30 years, and we are committed to creating the best customer experience for every customer we serve. Here is a customer testimonial from our website:

“The stress of having a flood at our home was made easier by SERVPRO of Tustin. We discovered a major water leak in our upstairs master bath and bedroom which also flooded our garage.  Our insurance company called SERVPRO who responded and stayed at our home until 4 a.m.  They showed up every day (and on time) to check on the drying process.  When that was completed, we had their crew repair the walls and paint. That crew was great. The last thing that needed to be done was to stretch, clean and deodorize our carpet.  Again, the SERVPRO crew showed up on time and did not leave until everything was perfect. I can't say enough about how professional everyone at this company has been. I would like to especially thank Joe Valencia who is a perfectionist when it comes to his job.  Great work by this company and I would recommend them to anyone.” Jerry N., Orange, CA

Algae vs Mold

9/3/2020 (Permalink)

Algae Vs Mold The photo shows the difference between what Algae looks like vs mold growth.

Algae

Algae is naturally occurring. It enjoys a life of moisture and sunshine. It is a moss-like plant that moves via airborne spores. It is more common in humid climates and commonly becomes an issue on shingles and exterior walls and walkways that stay damp. It is typically green to dark green.  Algae may grow in well-lit bathrooms as well.

Mold

Mold prefers damp, dark warm areas that are not ventilated well, such as within walls, behind or under furniture, wet flooring, attics, and basements.  Mold needs damp organic matter to grow on such as paper, dirt, wood.  It does not grow on inorganic matter such as concrete, glass, metal, synthetic carpet, etc.  Mold may be present on inorganic materials if there is organic matter on the surface to feed on.

If you suspect you have mold, don't hesitate to call us for an assessment. Our team is highly qualified and always ready to help. SERVPRO Of Tustin (714) 480-1340

The Summer Heat May Affect Your Appliances

2/26/2020 (Permalink)

You know those hot summer days when you can feel the sun sucking away all your energy? Well, the same thing can happen to your household appliances during the summer too. When the weather gets hot, there are some preventative measures you can take to protect the systems and appliances in your home.

The higher temperatures outside can create a buildup of moisture on your appliances inside. This extra moisture can cause appliances to degrade faster, and can potentially cause electrical shocks. Appliances can also sweat, causing water to settle around cords and wires. It can also flood the interior of the system, which can potentially lead to mold.

You also must be wary of your appliances overheating. Appliances may have higher surface temperatures, and can lose function when overheated, or require more electricity to work properly. Most appliances use more energy during summer months because they have to work even harder to maintain a cool temperature themselves.

AC Units often have to work harder in the summer because in addition to cooling your home, they also work to remove moisture from the air. Consider installing a dehumidifier with your HVAC system, or using one in rooms where it gets hottest. The dehumidifier can remove moisture from the air and allow the Air Conditioner to work solely on cooling your home.

You should also maintain regular cleaning/maintenance of your unit’s filters and coils in order to ensure that it is working properly. The same should go for your fridge/freezer. Dirty coils can lead to overheating, which could leave you without an AC unit or a fridge.

Your fridge should also be kept somewhere cool (avoid hot garages). Once you find the right place for your fridge, be sure to give it ample breathing room. The fridge needs enough room to release heat, but you don’t want that heat to become trapped and cause the unit to overheat and stop working.

You should maintain regular upkeep and maintenance of all of your household appliances all year long, but it's especially important to be mindful of how they can be affected in this summer heat. Should you require emergency services, call SERVPRO of Tustin 24/7 at 714-480-1340
